Grandmother of deaf bilaterally implanted deaf child, Mother of her deaf father

by Grandma Judy
(Ione, WA)

Up until this ridiculous custody battle where the family court judge has ordered that my deaf son's deaf daughter MUST keep her CIs on ALL the time, I was for the CI. Now if I had it to do over, I would say, Let her stay deaf! He may get his parental rights taken away over this and I don't know that he will have funds to appeal. He is without an attorney now except for a public defender for the contempt charges the hearing mom has filed against him. The trial is May 13, 2010 at Kootenai County courthouse in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Judge James Stow presiding.(I would like to say "honorable" but I just can't bring myself to do that!

So sad to hear about the story of your deaf child! I know that it is very difficult to live as a deaf. But most of them can be cured from that situation utilizing the modern techniques of treatment. So don’t be worried thinking about that. Meaningful Use Stage 2

Speaking because of CIs NEW
by: Anonymous

Cochlear implants DO help children to speak orally in an easier way than struggling to learn to speak without them. That is, if the child is implanted early before the age of 2 years old. BUT-does it make them totally hearing? NO! NO! NO! They are still deaf when the implants are off. They are only HARD OF HEARING when the implants are on! They are still stymied when in large groups like
H of H are and I know one child who would rather read during recess than play with peers because it is easier than trying to socialize. We want children to speak and hear even a little bit because WE are lazy! WE don't want to put in the effort to learn a new language. WE don't want to get up off our lazy butts to run after the child when we want to get their attention. WE want THEM to do all the work! Think about it. Our AUDISM is really just self-serving. Come on parents of CI children. Make THEIR life easier and learn some ASL!!!! It will expand both your mind and the child's. AND ASL HELPS children with CIs to learn to speak better. Really, it is the ASL that does it! Don't let the oralist convince you otherwise. THEY are WRONG!

Don't go public NEW
by: Anonymous

The Deaf man this article was about has lost a great deal even though he himself didn't go public after the judge said not to. But the stipulation was written that said he had to keep everyone else from talking about his child's implants in the media. This is not fair since a person can't monitor the media unless they are on the internet 24/7! He has lost legal custody and gets to see his child only a couple days a month. But lesson learned, if you are poor don't fight unreasonable people who are wealthy enough to ruin you!

what would you do then?
by: Anonymous

ok so what would you do if you are not for surgery and implants ....but what if you are going blind and you have a child that is deaf and still young enough to learn to hear and talk. do you learn as muchasl now and hope you could communicate later, or focus on asl and get CI so you could still talk with your child?

AS the paternal grandma, I am already the EVIL person in the mom's eyes. Her family has power and means to destroy us. I wish I had gained a better understanding a long time ago. Maybe I could have stopped this. I am more worried about her internal mental health scars from being kept from her deaf father whom she adores, than the physical CI scar. Can't help that now. But hopefully I can help get her father's rights back!

Pah!
by: Sandra Goldstein

To err is a human being. The child has two scars (cochlear implant) for the rest of her life.

I still wonder about blind children. Do their parents show their efforts to implant optic(eye) to make them see. Most parents of blind children accept them as they are. Parents of deaf children seem not to accept their deaf children. Helen Keller who was deaf and blind preferred to be blind to to be deaf. Blind children can hear and enjoy music. Deaf children can see and enjoy seeing colorful pictures and sightseeing.

Leave deaf children alone. Do not fix them period. Accept them period.
